The original work is as follows: Reinterpretation of the Face of Saint Peter Penitent by José de Ribera

This original piece offers a profound revision of the iconic face of Saint Peter Penitent, as painted by José de Ribera. In this reinterpretation, the face of Saint Peter, tinted in shades of green, appears to float on a deep blue background, evoking the image of a clearing of light in the midst of a forest. The composition is imbued with a sense of movement, with certain areas of the face appearing to evolve in a dynamic manner, while others remain undetermined, thereby creating an ambience of uncertainty.

The work plays with the ambiguity of the light source, prompting the viewer to consider whether it emanates from the outside, illuminating St. Peter's face from above, or from within the figure himself, projecting a light that conditions his expression and thought. This ambiguity introduces a suggestive and emotional dimension to the work, encouraging the viewer to delve into the character's depths beyond the confines of the religious realm.

The work's focus shifts from the spiritual to the visceral and organic, with St. Peter's face interpreted as a map of emotions and affections. Each element of the painting, from the brushstrokes to the shadows, reflects a complex web of feelings, challenging the traditional perception of the religious figure and bringing it to a more human and existential plane. The work encourages reflection on the underlying emotions that inform each gesture and expression, challenging traditional religious interpretations.

This reinterpretation not only pays homage to the master Ribera, but also reimagines his vision through a contemporary approach, thereby offering a new perspective on the themes of pain, repentance and the inner struggle of the human being.
